Recognized as a unique 'Multi - Sport Event', the Commonwealth Games are going to be held in Delhi, the state capital of India. Initially, when the first Commonwealth Games were organized in Hamilton in 1930, the six major sports of the event were: Athletics, Aquatics, Boxing, Lawn Bowls, Rowing and Wrestling. But now there has been several changes to the pattern.
The sports included in Commonwealth Games are categorized into Core, Optional and Recognized games. Apart from that, Commonwealth Gamed Federation (CGF) has also acknowledged a few other sports, but these are not incorporated in the programmes of the Commonwealth Games 2010 yet. The games suggested by commonwealth are - Billiards/Snooker, Canoeing, Golf, Handball, Life Saving, Softball, Yachting/Sailing and Volleyball.
As per the guidelines of Commonwealth Games Federation, each candidate city willing to host Commonwealth Games should incorporate a minimum of 10 core sports in their programme. Besides, it has to include up to 7 extra sports from the list of optional sports. Moreover, there should be a maximum of 4 team sports in the entire programme.
Cricket is not listed as a recognized sport as it appeared in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Contrary to this, Kabaddi is a demonstration sport in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Secondly, basketball is exchanged with archery, tennis, billiards and snooker for men.
